How To Make The Perfect British Ice Cream Sundae

The weather is finally starting to get warmer here in the UK and summer is just around the corner. Of course, as soon as the sun comes out, many British families will be taking to their garden, having BBQs and listening out for the ice cream van. There is no denying that ice cream is a classic British treat and summer-time favourite for many here in the UK and these days, there are so many options to choose from.

During the summer months, many families will choose to purchase tubs of ice cream to keep in the freezer and you may be wondering how you can make the most of this summer staple. Thankfully, our team here at British Essentials have made a fair few traditional ice cream sundaes during previous summers and they are the perfect solution for everyone. Keep reading today for some of our top tips on how to make the perfect British ice cream sundae.

Cone or bowl?

One of the first decisions to make when creating your sundae is whether you’re sticking to the traditional ice cream cone or you’re going all out with a bowl. If you don’t have traditional ice cream sundae glasses then you can use your standard bowls. Often, if you’re looking to make a big sundae with lots of ingredients then a bowl is a great choice but, there is nothing stopping you from topping your ice cream sundae with a cone so you can still enjoy the wafer too.

Choose your base

Next, think about what you’re going to make the base of your ice cream sundae. Often people will choose pieces of cake, chocolate bars, waffles or biscuits and you can really tailor this base to your specific taste making it a real British treat. However, if you’re looking for a slightly healthier option then we think that fruit is a great choice too. You don’t necessarily need to use fresh fruit either, any fruit pots, like the ones that Dole offer, are a brilliant base for your sundae.

Load up the ice cream

Once your base is in the bowl then it is time to add your ice cream. Of course, this can be any flavour you like and whatever you have in the freezer. Depending on the base you’ve chosen you may want different flavoured ice cream to match, for example, a waffle base with chocolate ice cream or a fruit base with vanilla ice cream. There is no stopping you from having more than one flavour of ice cream too, after all, it’s called a British treat for a reason.

Pick your toppings

This is the final step and definitely the best step. The topping of a sundae is the best part and again, you really can choose anything that you like. One of the best bits about topping an ice cream sundae is adding a sauce and for us, Lyle squeezy syrup is the only option. Whether you want chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce or even butterscotch sauce, they have the perfect syrup. Again, depending on your base and ice cream choice you may want different syrups.

Of course, the traditional way to finish any British treat of this kind is with a chocolate flake too. So, no matter what you plan on making your sundaes with, make sure you have some Flake bars in the cupboard.

Making a traditionally British ice cream sundae

Using the tips above you can create the perfect ice cream sundaes this summer. Of course, there is an option for everyone and no matter what your family's preferences may be, it is really easy to please everyone. Hopefully, the sunny days will last and you will be able to enjoy ice cream sundaes all summer long.
